Re-shoeing just the ticket for Ra in HK International Mile
Posted @ 10:11 amFrom NZ Thoroughbred News
The remedial re-shoeing of the tough front-running galloper Egyptian Ra (NZ) (Woodborough) could prove just the ticket needed in the HK-2 The Cathay Pacific International Mile on Sunday.
Whilst a bruised left front foot ensured a disappointing trial performance last Friday, trainer Tony Cruz has been pleased with the subsequent work of Egyptian Ra since his re-shoeing.
Subject to a customary pre-race veterinary examination, the 8YO gelding will head out on to the Sha Tin track with title defence in mind and with the confidence of a last start tick in October's HK-3 National Day Cup (1400m). Running his rivals ragged in the International Mile Trial last year, Egyptian Ra stopped the clock at 1:33.28 - a time only marginally outside of the 1:33.1 track record achieved by Down Town in 2007.
Second in the race last year Sight Winner (NZ) (Faltaat) likewise heads out with a strong claim in the HK-2 feature.
Turning the tables of his NZ-Bred nemesis, Sight Winner had the wood over Egyptian Ra in April's Gr.1 Champions Mile (1600m), shading him out of the winner's enclosure by 0.1 of a length
Success a year earlier in the 2007 Gr.1 Champions Mile also elevates the chance of the kiwi horse Able One (NZ) (Cape Cross) on Sunday.
Coming into the race with a win in June's HK-3 Premier Cup (1400m), Able One is one of 5 NZ fancies in the race.
New Zealand's other chances lie with last October's HK-3 National Day Cup (1400m) winner Fellowship (NZ) (O'Reilly) and with the proven 1600m Keeper gelding Special Days (NZ).

Con looks for pain relief with News Alert at Sandown
Posted @ 6:44 amUP AND coming Sydney trainer Con Karakatsanis was in search of some pain relief yesterday morning after suffering a suspected broken leg in a trackwork tumble at Caulfield, but the best tonic could come this afternoon when his consistent sprinter News Alert tackles the $100,000 Heffernan Stakes at Betfair Park.
Karakatsanis was attempting to load an inexperienced Byron Cozamanis-trained galloper into the practice barriers when the horse reared and tossed him to the turf.
''My left leg took the brunt of the impact and I knew I was in trouble,'' he said.
Thankfully for Karakatsanis, News Alert is in far better health and will line up in today's listed race as second favourite behind the brilliant Lucky Secret after an eye-catching run at Flemington a fortnight ago.
Karakatsanis brought News Alert, Mr Slick and Cox Plate contender Black Piranha to Melbourne in October for a spring campaign but is yet to register a win. ''It's been a big thrill for me and my owners to come down and have runners in races like the Cox Plate. We haven't had any luck, but it's been a good trip,'' he said.
While Black Piranha rounded off his preparation with a brave fourth in last week's group 1 Emirates Stakes, Karakatsanis' two other tourists are seeking a late spring victory today.
Following an impressive fourth in the group 2 Salinger Stakes down the Flemington straight on Derby day, News Alert has his trainer confident that he can salvage a minor victory from the southern sojourn. (www.theage.com.au)

Derby sensation...Shamoline Warrior OUT on race morning
Posted @ 7:18 amWhat a shocker! Shamoline Warrior's last-minute scratching has smashed Victoria Derby appeal. The pre-post hotpot has a lung infection and an elevated temperature. Latest betting sees Rockferry the new fav at 11/4.
In another shock, it's been announced that Godolphin galloper Kirklees will not run in the Melbourne Cup, moving Vigor a step closer to getting a start next Tuesday. Godolphin's trainer Saeed Bin Suroor made his first appearance at Sandown on Saturday morning and ruled his horse out because he wasn't satisfied with the horse's appearance.Vigor has been scratched from the Mackinnon Stakes.

'Ride him patiently' says Herman as Mourilyan looms as Cup chance
Posted @ 7:16 amTrainer Herman Brown wants Mourilyan ridden with utmost patience in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup. The stayer has been heavily backed in the last week and Brown and jockey Glyn Schofield are confident he'll run well. Brown says: 'He totally switches off until about the 1000 metres of his races, then he wakes up and starts to look around and think 'come on let's go'. He's like a sleeping lion.'
What's the latest on Efficient's troublesome off-foreleg? Owner Lloyd Williams says: 'There is a bit of thickening there...It's the same injury he was suffering last year but it is not as bad as it was last year. I would think we will see him on Cup day but I am not a vet. If there is any doubt, then of course he won't start.' Efficient is likely to have his final Cup workout at Macedon on Saturday morning. Racing Victoria vets will examine him later in the morning. The final Melbourne Cup declaration fee of $45,375 is due by 5pm. As there are no emergencies declared for the Cup, stewards will be anxious to ascertain Efficient's condition before final payment time.

Top NZ jockey wins Moonee Valley ride against Aussie gals
Posted @ 7:02 pmSam Spratt has won the 08/09 New Zealand Lady Jockey Championship Series and now she gets a chance to ride against Australia's top female jockeys in a special race at Moonee Valley on Oct 9. Sam is NZ's leading female jockey, finishing 2nd on the national Premiership table with a total of 112 wins. She was the #1 jockey in NZ on prizemoney won ($3,403,278)and winning the most Group and Listed races over the season. At the Valley, Sam will take on the likes of Kathy O'Hara, Clare Lindop, Libby Hopwood, Mandy Radecker, Chloe Chatfield, Michelle Payne and Linda Meech in an RB78 hdcp over 2040m.
Steven King has lost his appeal against a careless riding suspension. The decision means he misses out on the ride on Predatory Pricer in the Turnbull Stakes. Dawyne Dunn is the replacement rider.
Big news for the girls...Michelle Payne has landed the prize ride on El Segundo in the Grp 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Sat. She's the replacement for suspended regular jockey Luke Nolen, who is out for 20 meetings. Michelle got the ride ahead of a swarm of top-name jockeys. Trainer Colin Little says: 'Michelle has ridden El Segundo, and she actually won his maiden on him, and she's always helping me out riding work, so it was not really a terribly hard decision to make.'

'Easy does it' for Danleigh after Manikato triumph
Posted @ 7:40 amGOLDEN Slipper Stakes winner Phelan Ready may have narrowly fallen short of another group 1 victory last night at Moonee Valley when he was beaten in the Manikato Stakes by Danleigh, but the performance could have resurrected his Caulfield Guineas campaign, reports The Age.
It says: In a thrilling race which featured enormous efforts from Phelan Ready and third placegetter Nicconi, Danleigh ($17) burst through late to score by three-quarters of a length from Phelan Ready ($17), with Nicconi ($4.60) a long head away third.
Phelan Ready's trainer, Jason McLachlan, said the three-year-old had recovered after barely negotiating the final turn, and the Guineas was back on the agenda after he missed a vital run last week when he was scratched at the barriers at Caulfield on veterinary advice.
''I think that shows there's nothing wrong with him,'' he said. ''If he got around the last corner he would have won, and I know it's an unorthodox prep, which is not my fault, but we're obliged to go to the Guineas [on October 10].''
David Hayes was speechless after watching Nicconi come from last to be narrowly beaten. ''If he drew 13 you could understand why he was there [last], but he drew six. If there was one place you didn't want to be in the race it was last and pulling, and that's us. It was a huge run.''

Berry boys get the call from Portelli
Posted @ 7:28 amWARWICK Farm trainer Gary Portelli will use the services of twin apprentices Nathan and Tommy Berry at Saturday's group 1 George Main Stakes meeting at Randwick, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
It says: While they are unable to use their apprentice claims in group and listed races, Portelli is adamant ''they'll get the job done'' when riding in races such as the Dulcify Quality, Colin Stephen Quality and The Nivison for the trainer.
''I'm giving both the boys every opportunity I can,'' Portelli said on Thursday. ''I know their claim helps, but it is not the be all with them. Some kids with three-kilogram claims can sit three wide on a good horse and the claim helps them get home.
''But, with Nathan and Tommy, they give their horses every chance. They win races because they are good riders.''
Portelli will start Romanus and Mirrasalo in the Dulcify, with both on their last chance for the spring carnival.
''Romanus has been struggling for form, whether he needs to be gelded or dropped back in grade remains to be seen,'' Portelli said. ''We are putting the blinkers on him and we will ride him aggressively again. He ran in the Gloaming last weekend and he sat outside the leader but just didn't come on in the straight.
''The winner [So You Think] came at him at the furlong and he half baulked at him.''
Portelli said Nathan Berry rode Romanus in all his trackwork and ''he knows how to get the best out of the horse''.

Whobegotyou tsunami arrives for Cox Plate
Posted @ 1:59 pmMonday, September 14
The Whobegotyou tsunami has arrived for the Cox Plate...The Dato winner is now a hot fav at 5/2. Centrebet's Neil Evans says: 'The punters have come from everywhere to back him in the Cox Plate...I think they were waiting to see what he did with the blinkers on before they launched into him...They got their answer on Saturday in no uncertain terms...He has lost nothing and the sheer weight of money has forced us to trim his price into a clear $3.50 favorite.' Runner-up Mic Mac will not contest the Cox Plate, says trainer Greg Eurell. He's going to targe the $500,000 Sportingbet Manikato Stakes (1200m) at the Moonee Valley night meeting on Sep 25.

Officials fear organised crime link to Victorian racing, says report
Posted @ 4:27 pmOFFICIALS fear widespread infiltration of Victorian racing by organised crime after revelations that underworld figures own a horse at the centre of a doping scandal and other pacers and thoroughbreds, reports The Age.
It says: The underworld link to harness racing horse Em MaGuane - which last month tested positive for the stimulant EPO - along with several other positive tests has sparked serious integrity concerns in the lead-up to the Melbourne spring carnival.
Some racing and organised crime investigators suspect EPO, or erythropoietin, known as an illegal performance enhancing drug used by cyclists to boost red blood cells, may be in far wider use because it is difficult to detect.
Harness Racing authorities are conducting two inquiries into EPO use and are awaiting further analysis of an irregular sample involving a third horse. Thoroughbred racing investigators are conducting a separate EPO inquiry into horses trained by a father-son team.

Setbacks hits Smerdon's Caulfield Cup 'gold' chance
Posted @ 8:12 amONE of the country's most improved horses, Driffield Gold, has received a setback in his Caulfield Cup campaign, with a foot abscess forcing him out of today's D'Urban Stakes at Caulfield, reports The Age.
It says: Trainer Robert Smerdon said yesterday although the ailment could sometimes linger, he was hopeful the horse could return to work in the next few days and continue on his path towards a possible Caulfield Cup start.
''It hasn't burst out yet but he's down at the beach and hopefully it will resolve itself quickly,'' Smerdon said. ''He's pretty fit and he's pretty forward, so as long as it (abscess) comes out soon we don't envisage it will set him back too much.''

Bart takes a new view on Melbourne Cup campaign
Posted @ 12:55 pmIT IS understandable that, with 12 Melbourne Cups to his name, Bart Cummings would be wary of changing his successful formula. But the Cups King is open-minded about his approach to the 2009 Cup with last year's winner Viewed, who kicks off his campaign at Caulfield tomorrow, reports The Age.
It says: Cummings was forced to try something different last year for his 12th Melbourne Cup win. Circumstances demanded a different approach with Viewed after he missed a vital run a week before the Caulfield Cup when he was kicked at the barrier and scratched before the Yalumba Stakes. It meant he did not have a run for four weeks leading into the Caulfield Cup, where he finished 10th. He then ran last in the weight-for-age Mackinnon Stakes three days before his Melbourne Cup triumph at odds of $41.
Instead of derailing Viewed's Melbourne Cup assault, Cummings this week conceded the forced late change in his stayer's preparation may have been the difference between victory and defeat on the first Tuesday in November.
''It might have been a blessing in disguise, as it might mean that he appreciates a lighter campaign,'' Cummings said. ''I originally thought that he'd done a very good job to win the Cup considering the problem he had, but it might have worked in his favour missing out on that run. I've set no concrete plan for him on the way [to the Melbourne Cup this year]. It just depends on what it takes to get him there in the right shape.''

Cup hope Changingoftheguard just misses in Ebor in UK
Posted @ 12:58 pmMelbourne Cup hope Changingoftheguard was a certainty btn in the 2800m Ebor at York UK overnight. Bookmakers Paddy Power halved Changingoftheguard in price to 6/1 from 12/1 for next month's Ladbrokes St Leger after his unlucky head 2nd to bolter Sesenta. Aidan O'Brien's 15/8 market leader endured a torrid passage and couldn't claw back the Willie Mullins-trained winner. O'Brien said: 'He ran a great race, we will see where we go now...He is a young horse and it was a great experience for him.'
Four other Melbourne Cup hopes did not advance their claims in the Ebor. Warringah ran 5th, Deutchscland was 8th, Ladies Best 15th and Desert Sea 18th. Warringah (17/2 second fav) was prominent, led over 2400m out, was ridden hard 400m out, got headed well inside final 200m and could find no extra.
In Melbourne Cup betting following the Ebor, TAB Sportsbet has maintained Changingoftheguard as a $17.00 chance, and Warringah has firmed from $41 into $31. Deutschland has eased from $61 to $81, Ladies Best from $201 to $301 and Desert Sea from $101 to $301.
Adelaide jockey Simon Price has copped a $400 fine for a whip rule breach on the Mark Kavanagh-trained debutant Definitely Ready in a 1050m maiden race at Morphettville. He says: 'I was fined for hitting the horse when I was too far in front.'

Lamings seek injunction over ban on 2 horses
Posted @ 7:50 amTHE training partnership of Bevan and Richard Laming was last night seeking to gain an injunction from the Victorian Supreme Court to have its two starters who were due to race this weekend, reinstated, reports The Age.
It says: This follows referee samples from the horses testing positive to EPO.
The father-son combination had its two runners this weekend - Benelli in today's Liston Stakes at Caulfield and War Dancer in the Crisp Steeple at Sandown tomorrow - scratched by Racing Victoria Ltd stewards after they received the results of tests in England.
Both Lamings say they are innocent and were last night hoping for an injunction to overturn RVL's ruling that the horses be scratched.
Benelli has raced three times since June 11, when tests were conducted. He won at Sandown on June 13, finished second at Flemington on July 4 and won at Caulfield on July 18.
If Benelli was to be disqualified from those two wins, it would cost winning jockey Craig Williams a share of the Melbourne jockeys' premiership title for the 2008-09 season, after he tied with Damien Oliver.
''It's too early to pre-empt anything like that at this stage,'' acting chief steward Allan Reardon said. ''We're in the early stages of the investigation and the main thing was to withdraw the horses from their engagements based on the evidence we have been given.''
The blood samples were taken from Benelli and War Dancer on June 11 as part of out-of-competition testing being conducted by RVL.

Rothesay's absence throws San Domenico wide open
Posted @ 10:37 amTHE absence of crack colt Rothesay has thrown Saturday's group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Randwick wide open, reports Craid Young in the Sydney Morning Herald.
His report adds: "He is too good a horse, too valuable to risk," Rothesay's trainer Gerald Ryan said on Thursday after finding out the horse was sick.
Ryan has given up on the $1 million Golden Rose at Rosehill on August 29 for the colt, a brilliant winner on debut at Rosehill last month, but has not ruled out a shot at the group 1 Caulfield Guineas in October.
"He had a bit of a temperature when I checked him this morning," Ryan said. "He never ate his feed overnight, that's how I knew he was crook.
"He can't run until the Up And Coming and then he'd have to back-up seven days later into the Golden Rose, and I won't do it to him. There is still plenty of time to get him ready for the Caulfield Guineas."
The absence of Rothesay has led to fellow Rosehill trainer David Payne warming to Winter King ahead of stablemate Cortina Gal.

Stewards probe EPO positive tests in Victoria
Posted @ 8:06 amA VICTORIAN trainer was yesterday under investigation by Racing Victoria stewards after two of his racehorses tested positive to the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO) and could face disqualification for up to five years if found guilty, reports The Age.
It says: In an Australian thoroughbred racing first, the two horses were part of out-of-competition testing when the abnormalities were detected.
The out-of-competition tests were analysed by a Victorian laboratory and after the abnormalities were detected the samples were then sent to the Hong Kong Club's laboratory where the finding was confirmed.
Further analysis of the samples was being conducted by the Horse Racing Forensic Laboratory in the UK. But Racing Victoria will not release the name of the trainer until the UK test results are known.
''The investigative process is ongoing and I can't say anything further. It would be inappropriate at this stage to comment on the identity of the person involved,'' said Dayle Brown, RVL's general manager of integrity services.
Brown said a new kit for testing for EPO had been in place since last spring. ''We've had this robust regime in place for some time and this is the first time we've detected the substance EPO,'' he said.

ANZ ratings: Scenic Blast and Weekend Hussler hold top slots
Posted @ 6:51 pmThe 2008-09 ANZ Classifications have been released reflecting the best individual performances by horses during the recently concluded racing season in Australia and New Zealand, reports Breednet.com.au.
It says: The highest rating for an individual performance during the season was 122 achieved by outstanding Perth sprinter Scenic Blast and reigning Australian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler. Royal Ascot hero Scenic Blast achieved a rating of 122 when beating Fleeting Spirit to win the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes (1000m) in June. He also achieved that rating in winning the Crown Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington in March.
Weekend Hussler also achieved a rating of 122 when he beat Pompeii Ruler to win the Group 1 Rokk Ebony Underwood Stakes (1800m) in September after winning the Memsie (1400m) and Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at has two previous starts. Veteran campaigners Apache Cat, Pompeii Ruler and Takeover Target produced the next highest rated performances of the season on 119. Tatts Cox Plate (2040m) victor Maldivian sat next on 118, a rating he also achieved in winning the C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) when resuming during the Melbourne Festival of Racing.
New Zealand
The best performance by a New Zealand-trained horse during the season was produced by four-year-old Nom Du Jeu (115) when finishing second to Godolphin galloper All The Good in the BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m). The top rated mare in New Zealand was Princess Coup at 112 in recording her second successive victory in the Kelt Capital Stakes (2000m) in October.

Linda rides the winning wave with 103 tally this season
Posted @ 1:51 pmLinda Meech is a big fan of the adage "have saddle will travel" and with that in mind, the jockey, who is on the crest of a winning wave, heads to Adelaide on Saturday, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
It adds: Meech, 28, is winding up her best season and she makes no secret that top Caulfield trainer Peter Moody has gone a long way to making it possible.
"Peter Moody has been absolutely fantastic to me, very loyal," Meech said this week while reflecting on a season that has already netted her 103 wins in Victoria alone, right up there with city premiership contender Craig Williams.
Meech was apprenticed in Victoria to Moody and the Stawell-based Terry O'Sullivan but given "I don't normally stay in the one place too long", she ended up in Sydney for a four-year stint during which she rode at the provincials for leading trainer Gai Waterhouse. This time last year Meech decided to return to Victoria and has not looked back since.
"To ride 103 winners in Victoria has been very good, great, in fact," Meech said. "But, given I did my apprenticeship in Victoria, I did already have plenty of contacts when I came back here. The same people who supported me before have stuck by me and we've been having plenty of luck together. I can't complain." Upon her return to Melbourne, Meech said she gave Moody a call.

Robinson plans appeal against 3 months ban
Posted @ 4:41 pmAppeal on the way...Allan Robinson says he will lodge an appeal after Racing NSW stewards suspended him for three months on a mishandling charge. Robbo says: 'To say I'm gutted is an understatement...I haven't done anything wrong.' The controversial jockey was found guilty under Australian racing rule 135 (b) for his ride on Kwilas Law (4th, 20/1) in the John Cobcroft Tribute Handicap at Quirindi on May 1. In simple terms, it means he is alleged to have failed to give the horse every chance of winning or placing.
The ink is dry...Caulfield winner Inkster has been retired to stud just days after her impressive win in the Glasshouse Handicap (2400m). Trainer Mick Price was keen to continue her racing career but owners Blue Gum Farm decided on retirement. BGF client relations manager Darryl Sherer says: 'She left the stable on Monday and she's now back home at Euroa to get ready for the breeding season.'

Imports in clear after EI scare at Eastern Creek
Posted @ 8:22 amAN EQUINE influenza scare at the Eastern Creek quarantine station has been resolved, with overseas horses feared to have brought the dreaded virus into the area instead reported to be suffering from equine herpes, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
Its report adds: Racing NSW officials were happy to hear of the lesser and more common virus being detected, with memories of the EI outbreak in NSW and Queensland in 2007 flooding back.
Racing in Sydney and Brisbane was shut down for months when the first EI outbreak in Australia was found to have originated from Eastern Creek on the eve of the 2007 Sydney spring carnival.
A subsequent inquiry found that procedures in place at Eastern Creek at that time led to the devastating outbreak.
Andy Carroll, the chief veterinary officer of the state Department of Agriculture, yesterday issued a release stating that "stronger biosecurity measures were put in place at government quarantine stations following the 2007 outbreak of EI, including a more stringent vaccination and testing regime for EI".
