Rhyno chases winning re-launch in Eclipse Stakes

Saturday, November 21, 2009

Posted @ 7:11 am

IT IS NOT a race that so much unearths future group 1 horses, but the Eclipse Stakes at Betfair Park has re-launched several stagnant careers and so it may again today if the once-popular Rhyno Chaser is in the finish, reports The Age.

It says: For ex-Kiwi and now Hawkesbury-based Wanda Ings, the group 3, $125,000 race is a telling one in the mixed career of Rhyno Chaser who, 14 months after his last victory, is on the verge of either falling back into the large pack of nondescript restricted-class gallopers or once again emerging as an elite performer.

A most promising young horse, back ailments and other niggling injuries have halted his rise to the elite weight-for-age events as many had predicted for him.

''The way he's putting those niggling injuries behind him is very encouraging, but it might not be until the autumn when he's really ready to show us his best,'' Ings said yesterday.

''He's had no serious problems and no leg worries, but the problems are enough to pull them up and that's what happened to him. But he's getting better, no doubt, and I think he'll run a big race on Saturday.''

Ings has a dozen horses in her team and Rhyno Chaser, who she's trained for just a handful of starts, is the horse that could deliver her breakthrough victory.

''He was with Kevin Moses and then Graeme Rogerson at Randwick before I got him and he's a horse that has really appreciated having a paddock during the day,'' she said.

At his second start, Rhyno Chaser won the listed Baillieu Stakes at Randwick and at his fourth start finished fourth behind the likes of Samantha Miss and Sebring in the group 1 Champagne Stakes.

As a spring three-year-old he was unluckily beaten in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle before winning the Dulcify Quality before a spell.

In the autumn, he contested the Rosehill and Randwick guineas, as well as the Doncaster Handicap, but his only glimpse of form came when third in the Carbine Club Stakes.

Re-shoeing just the ticket for Ra in HK International Mile

Friday, November 20, 2009

Posted @ 10:06 am

From NZ Thoroughbred News

The remedial re-shoeing of the tough front-running galloper Egyptian Ra (NZ) (Woodborough) could prove just the ticket needed in the HK-2 The Cathay Pacific International Mile on Sunday.

Whilst a bruised left front foot ensured a disappointing trial performance last Friday, trainer Tony Cruz has been pleased with the subsequent work of Egyptian Ra since his re-shoeing.

Subject to a customary pre-race veterinary examination, the 8YO gelding will head out on to the Sha Tin track with title defence in mind and with the confidence of a last start tick in October's HK-3 National Day Cup (1400m). Running his rivals ragged in the International Mile Trial last year, Egyptian Ra stopped the clock at 1:33.28 - a time only marginally outside of the 1:33.1 track record achieved by Down Town in 2007.

Second in the race last year Sight Winner (NZ) (Faltaat) likewise heads out with a strong claim in the HK-2 feature.

Turning the tables of his NZ-Bred nemesis, Sight Winner had the wood over Egyptian Ra in April's Gr.1 Champions Mile (1600m), shading him out of the winner's enclosure by 0.1 of a length

Success a year earlier in the 2007 Gr.1 Champions Mile also elevates the chance of the kiwi horse Able One (NZ) (Cape Cross) on Sunday.

Coming into the race with a win in June's HK-3 Premier Cup (1400m), Able One is one of 5 NZ fancies in the race.

New Zealand's other chances lie with last October's HK-3 National Day Cup (1400m) winner Fellowship (NZ) (O'Reilly) and with the proven 1600m Keeper gelding Special Days (NZ).

International federation gives high rating to So You Think

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Posted @ 6:57 am

Cox Plate-winning youngster So You Think's breakthrough spring campaign was recognised by the International Federation of Horseracing when the colt was included among the 20 best racehorses in the world, reports The Age.

It says: So You Think joined stablemate Viewed and Royal Ascot winner Scenic Blast on an international rating of 122 to put the trio on equal 17th place in the rankings, which were released yesterday. They were the only Australian-trained horses to make the top 50. So You Think achieved his 122 rating when winning the Cox Plate and held that mark for his second-place effort in the Emirates Stakes.

Viewed earned his rating for his Caulfield Cup victory, while Scenic Blast's Kings Stand Stakes win at Ascot, and his group 1 wins in the Lightning Stakes and Newmarket Handicap, placed him on equal terms with Hong Kong star Sacred Kingdom.

Funding court case battle looms in Sydney

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Posted @ 6:52 am

A CASE that will determine the future of punting on the sport of kings in NSW begins on the 18th floor of the Federal Court building in Sydney today, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: The outcome has ramifications for the funding of racing across Australia as online gambling continues to grow and and the behaviour of punters changes.

In one corner is the litigant Betfair, the high turnover, low-margin maverick online betting exchange that has been making headlines since its parent company was established in Britain in 2000. It is the world's biggest betting exchange with more than 3 million customers globally and 80,000 in Australia and New Zealand. James Packer's Crown owns half of the local operation.

In the other corner is the respondent, Racing NSW. Its mission statement demands it deliver the NSW thoroughbred racing industry ''improvement in its competitive position and increased financial returns to constituent stakeholders''.

Betfair is claiming the 1.5 per cent race-fields product fee Racing NSW imposes on Betfair's turnover is anti-competitive and discriminates in favour of the incumbent NSW TAB operator, Tabcorp. Tasmania's Betfair alleges the fee is incompatible with Section 92 of the Constitution, which enshrines free trade between the states.

Because of its business model, Betfair argues, the 1.5 per cent turnover fee is equivalent to it paying 60 per cent of its gross profit, while for the higher-margin NSW TAB it equates to about 10 per cent (assuming a blended take-out rate of 16 per cent). Betfair (which has a take-out of up to 5 per cent) instead wants to pay a 10 per cent tax on its gross profit, in line with the relationship it has with the racing industry in Victoria.

Racing NSW argues that Betfair and other corporate bookmakers have to pay their fair share to support the industry they rely on and believes that won't happen if payment is on gross profit - a figure it says businesses can too easily manipulate.

Hayes thrilled as All American settles in for Perth glory bid

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Posted @ 6:50 am

IT IS 20 years since David Hayes has been involved in a Railway Stakes win, but Better Loosen Up's victory in 1989 has him cautiously optimistic about All American's chances in Perth's premier race on Saturday, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: Hayes said yesterday he was thrilled with the way Australia's newest group 1 winner had settled in just a week after arriving in Perth, but experience told him the $1 million race at Ascot is not easy to win.

Hayes's Lindsay Park recorded its sole Railway Stakes victory when Better Loosen Up flew home to score in what was a preview of how he would dominate racing in the following 18 months. Notably, no winner since has bettered the 55.5 kilograms (on a 49 minimum) that Better Loosen Up lumped that day.

All American has 56 kilos (on a 50 minimum) following his upset win in the group 1 Emirates Stakes on the final day of the Flemington carnival.

All American and stablemate Largo Lad will have 14 rivals on Saturday, including fellow eastern states-trained horses Ortensia, Sniper's Bullet and Gold Salute, following yesterday's final declarations.

''He's settled in really well and looks to have gone on from his Emirates win, and that is the path that Better Loosen Up took,'' Hayes said.

Racing Victoria shows concern over Lloyd's feud with TVN

Monday, November 16, 2009

Posted @ 7:04 am

RACING officials confirmed yesterday that there was no onus on owners, trainers or jockeys to speak to the media in the wake of owner Lloyd Williams' instruction to jockey Michael Rodd to refuse an interview with TVN after winning Saturday's Sandown Classic, reports the Melbourne Age.

It adds: But, Racing Victoria Ltd is concerned about the incident and CEO Rob Hines will talk this morning with steward Allan Reardon, who was in charge at Betfair Park.

Following comments by TVN's Steve Moran after Williams' horse Tintern won the opening race, Williams and his son Nick told Rodd that he was not to speak to the industry TV network if he was successful on Zipping.

Moran had said it was wrong that Williams' new trainer, Robert Hickmott, was prevented from going on TV or speaking to the media after Tintern gave him his first success.

Yesterday, the feud between the owner and TVN continued when Nick Williams appeared on opposition channel Sky Racing.

Williams jnr said that there was no problem with the media and that he personally was upset by Moran's comments and directed Rodd not to speak after the Sandown Classic. ''I just told Michael Rodd that TVN don't want to hear from us,'' he said. ''We do things differently at our stable. It's done under a corporate structure where Lloyd Williams as the chairman speaks for the stable and if he's not available, I do. That's the way it's done. We employ 60 staff at our stable but we maintain a corporate strategy and we have done so all along.

''We do the same with our company, Hudson Conway. If Lloyd Williams is not available to speak then Nick Williams, as his deputy, will make comment, but we certainly don't allow the licensed construction chief to speak on behalf of the firm,'' Williams jnr said.

Williams tells Rodd not to talk to TVN after Zipping's win

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Posted @ 7:20 am

LEADING owner Lloyd Williams instructed jockey Michael Rodd not to speak to TVN after Zipping scored his third consecutive Sandown Classic yesterday, reports the Sunday Age.

It says: Earlier, Tintern gave the millionaire's new private trainer, Robert Hickmott, his first winner in the opening race, but when TVN approached Hickmott, he said he could not speak to the media and all questions were to be directed to Williams.

TVN commentator Steve Moran said it was disappointing that viewers could not hear about Hickmott's background as he was now training a powerful team of horses.

''I just thought that it was important that those unable to be at Sandown could get some insight into this new trainer,'' Moran said.

Williams then instructed his son Nick, who was representing his father at Sandown yesterday, to tell Rodd not to speak to TVN if Zipping was successful.

Rodd refused to be interviewed but Moran sent another message to Williams that if ''these punters are having their $50 and $100 on their horses surely they are entitled to know something about what is going on. Their money translates into prizemoney for your horses. It's not good enough''.

Scenic Shot set to make more impact in Sandown Classic

Saturday, November 14, 2009

Posted @ 6:53 am

THOROUGHBREDS don't come much more durable than Scenic Shot, reports Craig Young in the Sydney Morning Herald.

His report adds: The latest West Australian iron horse continues to front up on raceday and make an impact. He's yet another credit for the Morton family.

''[There has been] very little recognition for what he has done,'' Len Morton said on the eve of today's Sandown Classic, in which Scenic Shot is once again a contender. ''Look at his record. Running in group 1s, group 2s, you're racing the best around ...''

Morton is deputising for son Daniel, who has been travelling the world as the trainer of a serious sprinter named Scenic Blast.

One can only marvel at Scenic Shot's record. Kicking off as a juvenile in WA, the gelding won on debut. That was more than 4½ years ago and as Morton said: ''The boys are proud of him.''

Why wouldn't they be? The horse has definitely escaped the spotlight. He ran third in the WA Derby and has contested Caulfield, Melbourne and Australian cups. Apart from in WA and Victoria, the horse has also raced in NSW and Queensland.

To think the Mortons snared Scenic Shot for $36,000 at a Magic Millions Sale. To date Scenic Shot has competed in 17 group 1 races, 11 at group 2 level and a trio at group 3.

''With bonuses he has won over $2.5 million,'' Len Morton said. ''I trained the mother Sweepshot.''

Price looks for Miss Maren to boost a moderate spring

Friday, November 13, 2009

Posted @ 7:28 am

SEVERAL of Melbourne's leading trainers are licking their wounds after a less-than-successful spring carnival and while Mick Price counts himself among that number, the Caulfield trainer at least enjoyed some satisfying moments, reports The Age.

It says: The resounding win by Heart Of Dreams in the group 1 Underwood Stakes provided Price with his main highlight, but the surprising group 1 weight-for-age placings in New Zealand and at Flemington from his mare Miss Maren were possibly his most gratifying achievements.

''To see her run so well to be placed in the Kelt Capital [Stakes] in New Zealand and then follow that up with a second placing in the Mackinnon [Stakes] was really pleasing,'' Price said yesterday. ''Those efforts are going to stand out on her page as a broodmare in the future and that's what you try to achieve with mares like her. You try and make them broodmares for their owners and she looks pretty good on paper now.''

Price said he did not approach the spring carnival with too many expectations and was prepared to sit on the sidelines when races such as the Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas, VRC Oaks, Victoria Derby and the Caulfield and Melbourne cups were run. ''We tried to get a few to those races but ultimately they did not make it. It wasn't for a lack of trying,'' he said. ''Heart Of Dreams won his group 1 but could not produce in the Cox Plate. We never had huge expectations of the spring so when a horse like Miss Maren performs so well in those group 1 races, it's great.''

Price lost his proven group 1 performer Pompeii Ruler early in the spring to a rolled ankle while last spring's Thousand Guineas winner Gallica was also spelled with bone chips.

Tomorrow at Betfair Park, Price is looking to end the carnival on a high note and also add some more black type to the Stravinsky mare's page when he lines Miss Maren up in the $350,000 group 2 Sandown Classic. (www.theage.com.au)

Purple, Kidnapped set for Sheik's raid on Sandown

Thursday, November 12, 2009

Posted @ 6:52 am

TRAINER Peter Snowden has both the spring's final feature races in his sights at Betfair Park on Saturday, with confirmation yesterday that the Sheikh Mohammed-owned Flemington carnival winners Purple and Kidnapped will run, reports The Age.

It says: Purple, who last Saturday added the group 2 Matriarch Stakes to her two group 1 wins of last season, will tackle weight-for-age for the first time in the Sandown Classic, while rising star Kidnapped will run as hot favourite alongside stablemate Khas Kura in the Sandown Guineas.

No trainer has taken out both races since John Meagher teamed up with jockey Steven King to score with Tawlord and three-year-old Voting in 1993. Last Saturday at Flemington, Purple won over 2000 metres at just her third run from a spell, and Snowden's son, Paul, who runs the Melbourne arm of the stable, said the mare was at her peak.

''She's the fresh horse on the scene and she's going as well as ever, so it's the best time to have a crack [at weight-for-age],'' he said.

While Purple is already a confirmed star of the enormous Darley team, Kidnapped is predicted to join her as a group 1 winner next season after two impressive winning efforts in Melbourne this spring.

It's all over...Brian Mayfield-Smith gives up the training game

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

BRIAN MAYFIELD-SMITH said he was likely to give up training racehorses from next month after yesterday conceding financial pressures have forced him to abandon his Flemington stables, reports the Sydney Morning Herald (www.smh.com.au)

It says: Mayfield-Smith, 62, who will be remembered for ending the great Tommy Smith's run of 33 Sydney premierships to win the title in 1986, said yesterday he did not want to retire but could see no other option after a big drop in horse numbers at his stable in recent seasons.

''Essentially, it's simply the economics of the business,'' he said. ''If I keep going the way I am, I will keep losing money and really there doesn't seem any way to turn it around. To break even, I need 25 horses in work all the time and over the last few weeks, I've had about 17 and that equates to an operating loss of about $6000 a week. That's blowing away a lot of money.''

Mayfield-Smith retired from training once before - in the early 1990s - to live in Africa and help animal-conservation groups before again taking out a licence to train at Flemington a few years later. But he said that move was his choice.

The Queensland-born trainer, who began his career 38 years ago with one horse at the Cairns racecourse, said he was unlikely to take out a trainer's licence again.

Backed by Robert Sangster and Bob Lapointe's powerful Nebo Lodge stable, Mayfield-Smith had four more winners than Smith in 1985-86 to claim the title. He won it again over the next two seasons before Smith claimed the title back for the final time in 1988-89.

Aussie horses shine at China's new Wuhan racecourse

Australia's presence in China was underlined on Sunday, when Australian-bred horses took star billing at one of that country's most important Thoroughbred race meetings, winning five out of the seven races on the program, reports www.breednet.com.au.

It says: The success came at the annual China International Racing Festival, which was conducted by the China Equestrian Association (CEA) in Wuhan, a city of 9 million situated between Hong Kong and Beijing. The Aus-bred winners won over distances ranging from 1000m to 5000m and from 2YO to Open class.

Attending as a guest of the CEA, Aushorse Marketing Chief Executive Peter McGauran said that it was another sign of Australia's growing presence in the Chinese market.

"It was competitive and highly professional racing in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 6,000 cheering spectators" McGauran said.

The Wuhan race course is one of Asia's newest and largest with a seven story high, 200 metre long grandstand and state of the art IT. The giant TV screen is equal to the best in the world and 11 cameras are positioned around the track to record the action. No gambling is allowed.

Career on the line as Mitch Beadman fronts stewards

Monday, November 9, 2009

Posted @ 6:54 am

IT IS D-day for star young jockey Mitchell Beadman, whose career is expected to go on the line at Racing NSW headquarters today, reports the Daily Telegraph.

It says: Beadman, 19, is set to meet with deputy chief steward Greg Rudolph and industry training manager Maurice Logue, who is also part of the Racing NSW apprentices' support group, to discuss his options after splitting with the Chris Waller stable.

What Beadman says could determine whether he follows in the footsteps of his famous father Darren and continues as a jockey.

But even if Beadman, who has shown ability by riding 33 metropolitan winners, can convince the panel that he is determined to be a jockey, he still has to find a stable willing to take him on board to complete the final year of his apprenticeship.

The teenager and Waller parted ways on Friday and Beadman did not ride at Randwick on Saturday. It is the fourth stable he has split with during his apprenticeship.

Hayes shakes off bad luck...but glory belongs to All Silent

Sunday, November 8, 2009

TRAINER David Hayes yesterday exorcised the ill-luck that had plagued his spring carnival in spectacular style with a longshot Emirates Stakes win by All American, reports the Sunday Age.

It says: While Hayes and the entire's part-owners hit the jackpot in the $1 million race, however, the final day of the Flemington carnival belonged to one horse - All Silent.

In an astonishing performance, All Silent laid claims to being among the best sprinters in the world and is likely to get the chance to confirm that rating when he lines up alongside Australian sprinters Apache Cat and horse of the year Scenic Blast in the group 1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin on December 13.

An elated trainer Grahame Begg said: ''In international racing, you're always going to come up against some pretty smart horses, but he's a pretty special horse. We've got to see how he gets through [yesterday's run], but it would be nice to get there.''

Incredibly, All Silent was purchased by Begg's father Neville and sent to Hong Kong to race in 2006 but the horse refused to settle into his new surroundings and was eventually sent home. His name was changed from Chiu Shan Elite to All Silent and his ownership changed also with Neville Begg managing the new syndicate.

Begg's father did more than find the horse for his son. He also found yesterday's rider, Nicholas Hall, who won his second group 1 race after a month earlier winning the Turnbull Stakes on Efficient at the same track.

''Dad had been watching him and said he could ride really well, but he'd been pretty quiet,'' Begg said. ''But we had a few refusals - three or four refusals believe it or not - and so we offered the mount to Nick and he's two [rides] for two [wins] and has not made a wrong move on the horse.

''He's just a very patient rider,'' Begg said. ''He suited the horse very, very well. He's just clicked with him.''

It was 12 months ago to the day that All Silent announced himself as an elite performer by storming to victory in the $1 million Emirates Stakes over 1600 metres. But yesterday's effort to leave behind the best sprinters in the land stamped him as a horse of rare quality. ''You'd be happy to get one like him in a lifetime, so I'm pretty happy,'' Begg said.

Big plans underway for super-size Melbourne Cup in 2010

Saturday, November 7, 2009

Posted @ 6:26 am

IT MIGHT only have been a few days since the Melbourne Cup was run but the Victoria Racing Club signalled yesterday that planning for the 150th staging of the race next year was well underway, with the announcement that it would partner with the State Government and the Victorian Major Events Company in promoting the 2010 race domestically and internationally, reports The Age.

It says: ''This will be an important occasion for the VRC, for Melbourne and Victoria and Australia,'' said VRC chairman Rod Fitzroy. ''The program of events will provide an opportunity to reflect on the impact that the Cup has had on the development of our city and our nation.''

Fitzroy was joined at the announcement by Victorian Premier John Brumby, who said that next year would be a huge celebration for Victoria and Australia and an event that would be followed around the world. ''We want to ensure that next year's race is the greatest since it began in 1861,'' Brumby said.

The VRC and Tourism Victoria will spend $300,000 on a marketing campaign to raise awareness of the event in key markets in Australia and around the world. It was also announced that the 2010 Cup itself would revert to the 1930 design, which because of the Depression was reduced in size in subsequent years. The value of the Cup will be $150,000 - up by $25,000 on this year's trophy.

Despite some conjecture that the prizemoney for the 2010 race might be raised to $10 million, Fitzroy said next year's Cup will have a $500,000 increase to $6 million.

Corey takes the lash to RSPCA's credibility

Friday, November 6, 2009

Posted @ 7:18 am

MELBOURNE CUP-winning rider Corey Brown has taken the whip to the RSPCA, questioning its credibility, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: The animal welfare group raised concerns about Brown striking Cup winner Shocking after passing the winning post at Flemington on Tuesday.

Racing Victoria stewards summoned Brown to their room at Flemington yesterday before the first race on VRC Oaks day. Brown said he had just flicked his wrist in a celebratory gesture and did not believe there was enough evidence the whip made contact with the horse.

The Sydney jockey argued that if there was a hit it was unintentional. He said the video footage was inconclusive and any contact was ''not deliberate''.

If contact was made, it was only ever so ''slightly''. Brown explained that when the whip bent, he had flicked it. ''I don't believe I made contact with the horse,'' he said. ''I didn't want to hit the horse.''

Brown reserved his plea when charged with unnecessary use of the whip. Stewards found him guilty and fined him $500. Brown immediately went to the jockeys' room before returning with a statement.

''It's insulting to me personally that this story got any legs in the media,'' he said. ''The RSPCA really needs to take a good look at itself if this is the level of argument it going to run with.

''To be the key organisation representing the animal welfare in Australia and then to seek publicity based on rubbish ... to me it means the wider community should really question the RSPCA's credibility.'' Following Brown's first victory in the most prized race in Australia, which also earned him a 10-meeting suspension for causing interference to Cup favourite Alcopop and Kibbutz near the 1700 metres, the RSPCA again tore into the controversial whip issue.

Munsef stays to take a crack at Sandown Classic

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Posted @ 6:16 am

WHILE most of the latest group of international raiders prepare to jet back to Europe over the next week, veteran English stayer Munsef will remain at Sandown in preparation for the track's premier event, the group 2 Sandown Classic on Saturday week, reports The Age.

It says: Munsef's trainer Ian Williams yesterday confirmed plans to start the eight-year-old in the classic after he finished a solid 12th in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup. The only threat to those plans being a superficial wound sustained during the Cup.

''He's got a little bit of a gash on his hind leg but as long as that's not too much of a problem he'll run again in a week or so,'' Williams said. ''It's certainly a race that we're looking at for him but we've got to make sure that the injury picks up and doesn't bother him for the rest of the week, but I don't think it will be a problem.''

Munsef delighted Williams at his first attempt to win the Cup and whet the appetite for future Australian campaigns. ''It was a huge experience and I couldn't be anything less than delighted with the run. He was the right horse to bring and was beaten just a little over six lengths,'' he said.

Munsef, like many runners in Tuesday's race, struck trouble as the field bunched on the back of a moderate tempo. He was well placed mid-race but lost his position and only got going after the damage had been done.

Mark & Corey beat the blues to score a Shocking win in Cup

The win of Shocking in the Melbourne Cup (3,200m) at Flemington is the sweetest form of redemption for two men who've experienced the cruellest twists of fate that racing can muster.

Mark Kavanagh was a trainer who just could not seem to catch a break this spring, while Corey Brown was still haunted by memories of being beaten by millimetres aboard Bauer in last year's Cup. But Shocking ($10) overcame a wide run at the back of the field before making a sustained surge in the straight to overtake international raider Crime Scene ($41, Kerrin McEvoy

Another overseas contender Mourilyan ($21, Glyn Schofield) was third in front of 102,181 spectators. Master O'Reilly ($12) ran fourth for the second year running, while Kiwi longshot Harris Tweed ($101) gave his connections a bold sight finishing fifth.

The heavily backed favourite Alcopop ($4.80) raced a little ungenerously behind a slow pace up front before only battling to the line to finish sixth.

Bart Cummings, meanwhile, will have to wait another year for his 13th Cup after his trio Viewed (seventh), Roman Emperor (21st) and Allez Wonder (16th) failed to figure.

But today's victory caps a tumultuous spring carnival for Kavanagh.

"It hasn't sunk in yet. I've just won the Melbourne Cup," Kavanagh said. "Everyone be quiet because if this is a dream I don't want to wake up."

The trainer is no stranger to the high and lows of racing.

Two years ago Maldivian was scratched at the barriers in the Caulfield Cup but went on to win the Cox Plate a year later.

In the past month, the trainer lost Maldivian and top mare Cats Whisker through injury and watched his champion Whobegotyou go under as a short-priced favourite in the Cox Plate.

And rubbing salt into the wounds, Kavanagh was forced to scratch the favourite for the Victoria Derby, Shamoline Warrior, on the morning of the race.

"Spring carnivals are tough for everybody," Kavanagh said. "You've got to roll with punches and if you let those things take you off track you just lose sight of the ball and you just can't do that. But today is pretty good."

Shocking put the writing on the wall with an explosive win in the Lexus Stakes (2,500m) on Saturday and punters brought him into $10 from $26.

"I knew that win would improve him a lot," Kavanagh said. "The Melbourne Cup is obviously a race won by horses that peak on the day and I tried hard to make him do that." (ABC News)

Support blooms for Daffodil at call of the card

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

SUPPORTERS of New Zealand mare Daffodil caught bookmakers unaware when she was easily the best-backed runner for the Melbourne Cup at yesterday's Call of the Card at Crown Casino, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: The AJC Australian Oaks winner, which could give jockey Chris Munce his second Melbourne Cup victory, was backed to win more than $1 million at odds of $17.

The Bart Cummings-trained Viewed, out to make it successive wins in the race, retained favouritism for the $5.65m handicap when firming from $5.50 to $5, with form stayer Alcopop solid at $6.

''If you told me Daffodil would be the best backed when we walked over here, I would have laughed at you,'' said Betstar bookmaker Alan Eskander, who was one of five bagmen fielding at the Call of the Card.

''It probably reflects the lack of depth in this year's Cup,'' added Eskander, who is tipping Master O'Reilly ($14) to win the race at his third attempt.

Sydney rails bookmaker and Centrebet owner Con Kafataris was operating on the Call of the Card for the first time, and he said that while the betting interest from punters wasn't as intense as in past years when he had been on hand as a punter, there was still a ''good spread of money for most runners''.

''There was certainly some juicy odds on offer for punters,'' Kafataris said. ''A lot of the prices on offer, I think, were far superior to what we will see on raceday.''

Plunge likely as new part-owner throws support behind Basaltico

Monday, November 2, 2009

BASALTICO'S new part-owner Matt Tripp said yesterday that he believed the horse was as good as last year's Melbourne Cup runner-up Bauer and plans to back the horse to win up to $5 million in tomorrow's big race at Flemington, reports The Age.

It says: A bookmaker and punter, Tripp went within a centimetre of pulling off a $1 million-plus plunge last year when Bauer, whom he also had a share in, just failed to overhaul Viewed. But yesterday he vowed to go even harder with Basaltico, who scraped into the Cup field on Saturday night.

''It's a bit different this year because we've only just got into this horse, whereas last year we backed Bauer at 80-1 well before the race and did it the hard way as he had to win the Geelong Cup to get there,'' he said.

''But this one all came about over the last week and when the boys from OTI [Racing] offered me a share, I jumped at the chance because I think he's every bit as good as Bauer. He's got the Luca Cumani factor and will carry about the same weight [51.5 kilograms] as Bauer last year.''

Basaltico was last night quoted at $41 for tomorrow's race but is certain to firm after the planned plunge.

It is believed that the part-sale of Basaltico, who was placed over 3200 metres in Dubai this year, valued him at as much as $700,000 in a deal clinched late last week.

Included in his ownership is OTI Racing, managed by Terry Henderson and former Auustralian cricketer Simon O'Donnell, as well as leading owners John O'Neill and Mark Pejic and former AFL star and Brownlow medallist Shane Crawford.

Basaltico was the last horse into the Melbourne Cup field after a series of scratchings. After Efficient and Kirklees were taken out of the Cup on Saturday morning, Basaltico was still outside the Cup field and won a spot only after Zipping became cast under the barrier stalls before the Mackinnon Stakes and had to be scratched.
