Maldivian & Cats Whisker injured...OUT of spring racing

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Posted @ 8:45 am

Mark Kavanagh's top duo Maldivian and Cats Whisker have suffered leg injuries and have run their last races for the year. The outstanding pair both worked well at Flemington this morning, but on cooling down were found to be suffering injuries. MK says: Maldivian worked well on the grass this morning but on cooling down was found with heat in his near side front tendon...It has been discovered he has a tear of 12.5 per cent and he's out for the spring carnival...Cats Whisker worked very well on the grass this morning, but was lame on cooling down...She was x-rayed and it revealed she had chips in both front fetlocks.'

Speed Gifted OUT of Caulfield Cup...He'll chase Cox Plate glory

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Posted @ 7:40 am

Speed Gifted OUT of the Caulfield Cup...That's the word from trainer Lee Freedman. He's decided to throw the import into the Cox Plate as a springboard race for the mighty Melbourne Cup. LF apparently is worried that a tough 2400m race will take the edge off Speed Gifted for the Flemington 2-miler. It's bad news, of course, for punters who have thrown massive amounts of money on Speed Gifted for the Caulfield Cup. They've done their money cold...but, hey, that's a risk with long-range betting. Everyone knows the rules.

Godolphin cranks up the hype machine for Cups hope Kirklees

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Posted @ 6:50 am

The Godolphin mob are cranking up the hype machine for Kirklees. The well-credentialled stayer put in a spaqrkling gallop for Kerrin McEvoy on Monday, and the talk has started that Kirklees may prove to be another 'smokey' winner of the Caulfield Cup for Godolphin...just like All The Good was last year. Kirklees is around the 14/1 mark for the CC.

Travelling foreman Tommy Strang says: ''He's the horse this year, he's the No. 1...He's a more proven horse than All The Good, he's a genuine Grp 2 performer in the UK and was a Grp 1 winner as a 2YO...His form is very consistent, he's got loads of speed and that's his forte.' Godolphin reckon that Kirklees is good enough to win both Cups.

Alcopop gets 1.5kgs Melbourne Cup penalty, Allez Wonder up 0.5kg

Monday, October 12, 2009

Posted @ 2:05 pm

Alcopop has copped 1.5kgs for his easy win in Saturday's Grp 2 feature at Caulfield while Allez Wonder has gone up a half kilo for her win at Grp I level. Allez Wonder's win guaranteed her a penalty-free Caulfield Cup and she will now carery 50.5kgs in the Melbourne Cup. She has climbed the order of entry from 49th to 17th, guaranteeing her a start in Australia's great race. Alcopop has leapt from 63rd to 26th in the Melbourne Cup order of entry. This means he is virtually guaranteed a start.

'Irregularity' claim in pre-race sample from Starspangledbanner

Monday, October 12, 2009

Posted @ 6:43 am

Shadow looms...Caulfield Guineas winner Starspangledbanner is reported to have returned an irregularity in a sample taken in a lead-up race to Saturday's Grp 1 at Caulfield. Stewards are awaiting test results on a second sample.

Full power on...Glen Boss is supremely confident Victorian filly Irish Lights will win Wed's Grp 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. He says: ''Irish Lights has always promised to be something special...At her first start in a race she ran 2nd to Rostova and that filly was flying at the time....'She beat a class filly like Avenue on her merits and beat her easily and the fillies she was against in the Thousand Guineas Prelude are pretty much the same ones she'll be facing on Wednesday.'

Latest betting on the Thousand Guineas has Irish Lights at around $2.50, followed by Sister Madly $9.00, Silent Surround $11.00, Jolie Brise $13.00 and Majestic Music $13.00.

So, David Hayes has sacked Craig Williams...Well, you've got to blame someone.

Danny pleased with Master O'Reilly...Hyland lowers Zarita's sights

Sunday, October 11, 2009

Posted @ 7:32 am

News from Saturday...The 2007 Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly's Yalumba performance pleased trainer Danny O'Brien. He's convinced the Master is on track for his second Caulfield Cup attack next Saturday. Pat Hyland's mare Zarita had the run of the race but was one of the first beaten and she is now unlikely to press on to the Cox Plate and instead be aimed at something weaker.

Bjorn Baker, co-trainer of last year's Caulfield Cup runner-up Nom Du Jeu, was disappointed by the stayer's ordinary run. He over-raced and beat only one home. BB says: 'He didn't really settle and maybe the track might have been a touch firm for him but it wasn't what we wanted to see two weeks out from the Cox Plate...If we can get some rain then that will be on his side.'

Trainer Mark Kavanagh couldn't have been happier with Whobegotyou's powerful Yalumba victory. He says: 'That was good. Damien rode him well and he finished it off just as you would have wanted him to. He's on track.''

Allez Wonder firms from 200/1 into 12/1 for Caulfield Cup

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Posted @ 11:20 pm

The Bart Cummings trained Allez Wonder has firmed from 200/1 last week to 12/1 for the Caulfield Cup following her strong win in the 1600m Toorak Hdcp (Grp 1) at Caulfield. Allez Wonder is now exempt from the Caulfield Cup ballot. She is handicapped on 50kgs. Bart doesn't seem worried about the lift to the 2400m in one week. He says: 'Some of my other horses have done it. She mightn't be as good but she has a big heart.' (In 1981, the Gary Carson trained Silver Bounty ran 2nd in the Toorak and won the Caulfield Cup a week later).

The imported stayer Speed Gifted remains favorite for the Caulfield Cup. Betstar's market on Saturday night had him at 9/2, ahead of Predatory Pricer 11/2, Vigor 7/1 and the UK stayer Cima de Triomphe at 8/1.

The eagles have landed...Final international group arrives for spring

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Posted @ 7:37 am

The final batch of international horses were scheduled to arrive in Melbourne on Sat to join the four already stationed at Sandown. Expected are Mourilyan (Melbourne Cup) and stablemate Bankable (Mackinnon Stakes) along with other Melbourne Cup hopefuls Munsef, Changingoftheguard and Warringah.

Pity Jason Coyle...How will the racing industry judge his treatment by the Nathan Tinkler operation? He says: ''I'm really disappointed in the decision Patinack has made...I received a call on Thursday from (racing manager) Rick Connolly that Nathan and Patinack had decided that the horses would be picked up the next day and that I wouldn't be training for them. It was a total shock.''

But there's good news, too...Jason Coyle is now about to team up with the Iskander Group. Sheriff Iskander, Iskander Group's managing director, said his company is out to support racing identities as they rise to the top of the industry. ''Our companies will provide unique support to mentor and groom Jason Coyle into one of Sydney's most prominent and successful trainers,'' says Iskander, who has formerly supported John O'Shea and Chris Waller.

Lloyd's juggling act...It's the Caulfield Cup for C'est La Guerre

Friday, October 9, 2009

Posted @ 6:33 am

It's all done with mirrors...Lloyd Williams is producing his annual juggling act just to keep us all in a knot over which horse is going where...He's now saying that his top stayer C'est La Guerre WILL run in the Caulfield Cup and that Efficient is likely to miss the Cox Plate and go straight into the Melbourne Cup. That leaves the #3 member of the team, Zipping, to tackle the Moonee Valley wfa classic. C'est La Guerre was paid-up for Sat's Grp 2 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield, but Williams says that's off the agenda. The tycoon owner says: 'The Caulfield Cup fits in well for him...We've paid up for him all along and after I decided against running in the Herbert Power, it was the logical race for him. He'll come out of the Herbert Power. I didn't bank on there being a maximum field of 16 and I didn't fancy running him with 57.5kgs from barrier 16.''

And what about Efficient, current fav for the Melbourne Cup? LW says: ''I think Efficient might go straight into the Melbourne Cup without another run...I don't think he needs another start. We're lucky we can do a lot of off-the-track work with him up at our place at Mt Macedon and the more I look at that race and his performance, the happier I am.''

Kerrin McEvoy is expected to be given confirmation overnight from England that he will ride Kirklees when Godolphin shoots for back-to-back wins in the Caulfield Cup.

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Brisbane visitor Paprika continues to attract support for her 1st up run in the Schillaci Stakes on Saturday. The filly, who hasn't started sinceher 2nd to Phelan Ready in the Magic Millions 2YO on Januray 10, tuned up for a return to the track with a barrier trial win at Doomben. Paprika was listed at $8.00 in first markets and was the subject of a wager of $1100 e/w at those odds firming into $7, according to TAB Sportsbet's Glenn Munsie. He says: 'Shortly after another bet of $3000 @ $7 was taken and she is now on the second line of betting at $5 with Lucky Secret behind Apache Cat ($4)...All 3 favourites have had some backing with Apache Cat ($2500 e/w @ $4 and $2000 @ $4) along with Lucky Secret ($1200 e/w @ $5).'

Profound Beauty's Cup exit a PR blow for Melbourne Cup

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Posted @ 7:11 am

It's a PR blow...Profound Beauty's absence from this year's Melbourne Cup is a major blow to promotion of the great race. Trainer Dermot Weld is a superstar attraction and so are his horses. It's a bitter blow for Victorian racing administrators. Racing Victoria racing ops manager Leigh Jordon spoke to Weld late on Tuesday night and wasrocked by the news that the Cup's best credentialled overseas contender will not be here. LJ admits: 'It's a blow because she is a very talented mare and Dermot is a great drawcard and he was aiming for a third Cup win...But there are some quality horses already here and due to arrive that I'm sure will be most competitive.''

Throwing money away...Profound Beauty's owners paid $1450 at the second declaration stage for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, but less than 24 hours later had decided against a second crack at the race. Even Dermot Weld could not persuade them to change their mind. Dermot was very keen to run PB in the Cup.

Craig ponders appeal as suspension hits his spring hopes

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Posted @ 6:58 am

Bad news for Craig...Champ jockey Craig Williams' spring carnival is under threat in the wake of the 10 meeting suspension he's copped for careless riding. It means he will miss the top ride on Vigor in the Caulfield Cup....With the suspension commencing at midnight on Saturday and concluding before Geelong Cup day on October 21, CW will miss rides on My Emotion in the 1000 Guineas and Vigor. Will he appeal? He says: 'The Caulfield Cup is one of our holy grail races and I've got a great ride in Vigor so it's something to factor in when discussing the options.''

Bad news for Singapore...Jolie's Shinju's Aussie raid may be over. The Singapore mare returned another abnormal heart beat following her first gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday. Racing Victoria's chief vet Paul O'Callaghan says the heart issue is a serious one in terms of her short-term racing future. It's likely he'll recommend to stewards that she not start this Saturday at Caulfield unless further tests on Thursday are encouraging.

Caulfield Guineas hype is hotting up...Craig Williams is raving about his mount Trusting. He says: 'He was sharp and keen and I couldn't be happier on the way to the Guineas....There's something about him. He's got unusual high gears and while most horses on Saturday have a question mark over them at 1600m you just know he's going to relish it.'' So You Think's rider, Michael Rodd says: 'Denman's been up for a while so you never know if he's starting to come to the end of it but he's clearly the horse to beat.' Paul Snowden reckons Denman's final gallop at Flemington has convinced him he's the horse to beat on Saturday....He says: 'He's fine, he's more settled and happier where he is. He has familiarised himself with the surroundings at Flemington.'

Profound Beauty on the way...Whip laws in crisis again

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Posted @ 7:27 am

They're on the way...Racing Victoria's general manager of racing ops, Leigh Jordan, says Irish trainer Dermot Weld has already paid the Melbourne Cup third acceptance fee for his mare Profound Beauty. She'll arrive in Melbourne on Saturday along with Mourilyan, Bankable, Warringah, Munsef, and David Hayes' acquisition Changingoftheguard.

That stupid whip crisis just won't go away. No surprise! Latest news is that the regulations are in tatters with Victorian stewards about o dump national penalty guidelines following a strong attack on the new rules by Victorian racing's judiciary. Russell Lewis, chairman of the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board, has branded the Australian Racing Board's recommended penalties, which include suspension for jockeys for over-use of the whip, as 'absurd' and 'manifestly excessive'. The RADB yesterday reduced Craig Williams' four-day suspension for over-use of his whip to a $500 fine and also allowed an appeal on the same charge from apprentice Adam McCabe and varied his four-day ban to a $200 fine. The rulings prompted Victoria's chief steward Terry Bailey to claim that Victoria will no longer be bound by the newest penalty guidelines issued last month by the ARB.

What this means is that we are back to 'debacle' in the whip crisis. How will other States impose penalties? Will NSW jockeys face suspensions while Victorian jockeys do not? From the beginning, the whip issue has been poorly handled, poorly thought out, and now it's hit another hurdle. The introduction of padded whips should have been enough to stifle criticism from extremists but.no, the ARB had to push ahead to try to change Aussie racing...and for what purpose? There is now less trust in the game by punters. Are the horses they bet really going to be given every chance to win? Well done to Russell Lewis for throwing down a challenge to the ARB and its leading figures.
