Cox Plate betting hots up...Whobegotyou & Speed Gifted popular
Monday, October 19, 2009
Posted @ 4:38 pmTAB Sportsbet reports brisk betting on Monday for Sat's Cox Plate with just on $75,000 invested (win only) by 5pm. Spokesman Glenn Munsie told PPD: 'Best supported has been Whobegotyou with one bet of $20,000 @ $2.40 and smaller bets totalling another $10,000 taken today...Speed Gifted ($7.50) has been promoted to the second line of betting following one bet of $10,000 @ $9 taken this afternoon. Another $5,000 bet has been taken for the Lee Freedman trained galloper who missed the Caulfield Cup to concentrate on this race on his way to the Melbourne Cup.'
There's a lack of interest in Heart of Dreams for the Cox Plate. He's drifted from $7.50 out to $8.50. Defending Cox Plate champion El Segundo is another left friendless with only just over $1000 being invested today. He's blown from $10 out to $12. Sydney 3YO Manhattan Rain is another firmer ($18 to $15) following one bet of $5,000 @ $18 this morning which follows a wager of $4,000 @ $26 late last week. Bart Cummings' representative So You Think has had just over $5,000 bet for him and stays at $16. Late entry Rock Kingdom went up at $26 but since has had over $5,000 invested and is into $21.
Nash Rawiller is booked for Epsom Hdcp winner Rock Kingdom in the Cox Plate. RK was backed from $26 into $21 after connections paid a $130,000 late entry fee to get the 4YO into the field.

Viewed cops 1kg penalty for Melbourne Cup
Monday, October 19, 2009
Posted @ 12:14 pmCaulfield Cup winner Viewed has been penalised 1kg for the Melbourne Cup. He will now carry 58kgs as he attempts to win the Melbourne Cup for the second year in a row. The 6YO joins the 2007 winner Efficient at the top of Melbourne Cup weights. In the past 30 years, 26 horses have run in the Melbourne Cup with 58kgs or more with only Makybe Diva successful when she took out her third in 2005. Handicapper Greg Carpenter says: 'The win of Viewed on Saturday confirmed him as one of the great stayers of the modern era.'
Latest betting news from TAB Sportsbet's media chief Matt Jenkins: 'Rock Kingdom is now $26 in the Cox Plate and we have already taken a bet of $1,000. Other money today has been for Manhattan Rain with a bet of $5,000 at $18. In the Melbourne Cup, Viewed was $9 before winning the Caulfield Cup and is now equal favourite with Efficient at $6. The other big firmer has been Roman Emperor who is now into $10 from $31. Money today has been for Changingoftheguard with $3,000 e/w at $41.'
Here it comes...It's Changingofthemind for Changingoftheguard
Monday, October 19, 2009
Posted @ 10:29 amOh, no, not another one of those changing-my-mind Cup stories! Yes, indeed. Now it's David Hayes who is re-thinking his earlier decision to miss this year's Melbourne Cup with his new import Changingoftheguard. Apparently, he's been so pleased with Changingoftheguard since his arrival in Melbourne nine days ago that a crack at the Melbourne Cup is now a serious option. DH had intended running Changingoftheguard in the 2000m LKS Mackinnon on Sat week...but now, well, he's changing his mind. 'My gut feeling is that he'll run,' he says. In latest betting, Changingoftheguard (2nd in the 2800m Ebor in the UK in August) is quoted at 33/1.
Daffodil injured, Melbourne Cup bid under a cloud
Monday, October 19, 2009
Posted @ 9:21 amBloom fades...Kiwi stayer Daffodil's Melbourne Cup bid could be over. The 4YO mare (16/1 in the latest betting) sustained a deep cut below a front knee in the Caulfield Cup. Trainer Kevin Gray is treating the wound with antibiotics in a desperate attempt to keep Daffodil on track for Tuesday week's big race.
Latest betting on the Melbourne Cup has Efficient and Speed Gifted sharing favoritism at $6.00 (5/1). The Betstar market on Monday morning:
Efficient 6.00
Speed Gifted 6.00

Injury ends Pricer's Cox Plate hopes...Bart's 3YO gets entry ticket
Monday, October 19, 2009
Posted @ 6:41 amUnplaced Caulfield Cup fav Predatory Pricer's injury-enforced exit from Sat's $3million Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley has virtually assured a run for the Bart Cummings trained 3YO So You Think. Predatory Pricer has a suspensory ligament injury which is expected to rule him out of racing for three to six months. He had been on the third line of betting at $9, behind the $2.40 fav Whobegotyou.
Will Caulfield Cup 3rd placer Vigor get a run in the Melbourne Cup? Maybe not. Ten races exempt the winner from a Melbourne Cup ballot but many experts reckon it's amazing that the 3rd placegetter may miss out on a run at Flemington 17 days...Vigor was 34th in line to make the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field before the Caulfield Cup and remains in that precarious spot. He will not start again before the Cup. Trainer Danny O'Brien says: 'It'd be great if he could squeeze in as he's got an amazing Flemington record and he's obviously going very well. But what will be, will be.'
Latest news from the Lloyd Williams camp...The reason for the flop of C'est la Guerre in the Caulfield Cup? Apparently he 'tied up'' but the stable expects him to be OK for the Melbourne Cup...Efficient will miss Sat's Cox Plate and go straight into the Melbourne Cup. Last year's Cox Plate runner-up Zipping will tackle the race again.
Top Aussie chaser Ginolad joins UK stable
Sunday, October 18, 2009
Posted @ 10:32 pmUK trainer Venetia Williams' Herefordshire stable has welcomed Australian chaser Ginolad, whose last run saw him finish sixth in the rich Nakayama Grand Jump in Japan. In Australia, nine-year-old Ginolad has a decent record, including a win in the Grand National. He is expected to contest races at around two and a half miles in Britain's National Hunt season.
Whobegotyou dominates Cox Plate betting market
Sunday, October 18, 2009
Posted @ 6:25 pmWith a week to the Cox Plate, bookies are keeping a tight check on the well-fancied Whobegotyou. In latest markets, Whobe is at $2.50 (6/4) for the Grp 1 wfa classic at Moonee Valley. The Betstar market on Sunday:
Whobegotyou 2.50
Heart Of Dreams 7.50

What happened to Cima de Triomphe? Cumani stable dumbfounded
Sunday, October 18, 2009
Posted @ 11:32 amWhat went wrong with the much-hyped UK raider Cima de Triomphe in the Caulfield Cup? No-one seems to know. Trainer Luca Cumani's wife Sara Cumani was shocked by CDT''s performance, but says he may still tackle another race this spring. She says: 'Not much I can say really, the horse was very average. Damien Oliver said the only possible excuse was the ground but I don't know...He looked great before, he pulled up good, he looks good and didn't blow a lot. It's just one of those things. We might look at another race if he pulls up OK.'' CDT needed to finish in the top 8 to qualify for a Melbourne Cup start next month, but instead he turned in the worst run of his 15-start career.
There's still hope for the Cumani stable. It has Basaltico running in Wed's Geelong Cup 2400m and he needs to win it to qualify for a start in the Melbourne Cup.
Godolphin's Kirklees was a little better than Cima de Triomphe. He ran 7th. Stable rep Tommy Strang says Kirklees came through the race in good order and he expects the stable to push on to the Melbourne Cup, hopefully with travelling partner Crime Scene who runs in the Geelong Cup on Wednesday.
Efficient, Speed Gifted top latest Melbourne Cup betting market
Sunday, October 18, 2009
Posted @ 10:56 amIt's a battle royal at the top of betting for the Melbourne Cup in the wake of Viewed's tremendous Caulfield Cup victory. But the Bart Cummings trained super-stayer is still only on the second line of the market. He's topped by 2007 winner Efficient and the highly-regarded import Speed Gifted. They share the top line at $6.00 (5/1) with Viewed and Alcopop both at $7.00 (6/1). The Betstar market on Sunday morning:
Efficient 6.00
Speed Gifted 6.00
Alcopop 7.00
Viewed 7.00
Vigor 13.00
Roman Emperor 15.00
Daffodil (NZ) 17.00
Master O'Reilly 17.00
Shocking 21.00
C'est La Guerre 26.00
Ista Kareem 26.00
Kirklees (UAE) 26.00
Allez Wonder 34.00
Basaltico (GB) 34.00
Cima De Triomphe (GB) 34.00
Mourilyan (GB) 34.00
Zipping 34.00
Capecover (NZ) 41.00
Changingoftheguard 41.00
Munsef (GB) 41.00
Precedence 41.00
Whobegotyou 41.00
Despite an ordinary performance in the Caulfield Cup, the Godolphin stayer Kirklees will continue on to the Melbourne Cup. Godolphin's rep Diana Cooper says: 'We were initially a bit disappointed with Kirklees but on reflection he has hopefully put himself right for the Melbourne Cup...He stayed on well in the straight after being shuffled back on the far side and may have been a bit ring-rusty.'
Singapore's darling fails again but she's ready for another go
Sunday, October 18, 2009
Posted @ 10:15 amSingapore Derby winner Jolie's Shinju finished out of the money at Caulfield on Saturday but didn't disappoint connections with the effort. She ran 8th, beaten 6.2 lens in the Grp 2 Harrolds Stakes 1400m behind the Caulfield-trained mare Typhoon Tracy. Connections have ruled out a Cox Plate bid and instead will set her for a mares race during Melobourne Cup week. Stand-in trainer Len Treloar says: 'I think with some alterations to her training we should be able to get her back to her best form.'
Viewed faces penalty for Melbourne Cup
Saturday, October 17, 2009
Posted @ 6:38 pmWil super-stayerl Viewed cop a penalty in the Melbourne Cup for his Caulfield Cup win? It'll be a miracle if he doesn't. Trainer Bart Cummings says he isn't expecting a big penalty..but at least he's prepared for one. Viewed had 53kgs in last year's Melbourne Cup win and has 57kg this year. The handicapper is likely to penalise him at least a kilo. Bart says: 'He had a lucky run today because he got stuck to the fence. He might get a half a kilo, at the worst he might get a kilo.' The ease with which Viewed disposed of the CC field was clear enough evidence that he's in 'under' with his MC weight. The handicapper will have to hit him with 1 kg to 2kgs penalty. This might torpedo his Melbourne Cup prospects.
The two UK raiders were flops in the Caulfield Cup. Godolphin's Kirklees ran 7th and the Luca Cumani-trained Cima De Triomphe was a soundly-btn 13th. Headline-hype horse Predatory Pricer was backed from $8 on course to start favourite at $7 but he was caught four wide and weakened to finish 12th. New Zealand mare Daffodil ran on well to finish fourth.

Posted @ 7:22 amWith less than 8 hours to go, the morning betting market on Sat's Caulfield Cup has the UK raider Kirklees the fav at $7.00 (6/1) followed by NZer Daffodil $8.50, then Cima de Triomphe, Predatory Pricer and Allez Wonder all on $9.00. Top weight Viewed is at $15.00. Vigor is at $12.00.

Read predicts Daffodil will bloom for Caulfield Cup
Friday, October 16, 2009
Posted @ 10:45 amTop bookie Mark Read reckons Kiwi mare Daffodil can win Sat's Caulfield Cup. He says he'll take on the UK pair Kirklees and Cima de Triomphe. Read's predicting a slow pace that will ideally suit Daffodil. He says: 'Daffodil's rating is at its highest when racing at a mile-and-a-half ...She's blessed with the low weight and comes in at peak fitness.'
In other Cup news, Bart Cummings has decided to put the blinkers on Roman Emperor. His stable manager Bill Charles says: 'The Montjeu breed is known for improving when blinkers go on...They can improve up to three or four lengths when the blinkers go on....They'll make him switch on and concentrate a bit more as well.' Other gear changes are the addition of pacifiers to Ready To Lift's gear and a nose roll on Red Ruler for the first time.
Only a year or so after Betfair was branded the scourge and potential destroyer of the Aussie racing industry, the Victorian Racing Club is embracing the betting exchange with enormous enthusiasm! It and Betfair have entered into an agreement that will allow the betting exchange to show Melbourne Cup day races online to its overseas customer base. The two parties signed a one-year, non-exclusive agreement. It's the first time the VRC has allowed a European wagering company to stream its races online.
Good to see young jockey Seb Murphy back riding at Kyneton on Saturday. The former top apprentice has been on the sidelines for more than a year due to a back injury and general exhaustion. He has one ride in his new role as a 'senior' jockey -- aboard Pablo's Pick.
Cup fever rages...Punters rush to back Cumani's Cima de Triomphe
Friday, October 16, 2009
Posted @ 6:47 amBetting fever has swung into high-heat mode on the Caulfield Cup with just 24 hours to go before the field jumps away...Luca Cumani's much-hyped Cima De Triomphe is attracting big support, though some bookies are prepared to lay him all day and night. It's the same with Godolphin's Kirklees. Centrebet says Cima De Triomphe has clearly been the best-supported runner in the race since Wed's barrier draw. CDT was $10 before the draw, but has been heavily backed into $8. 'We've taken bets of $5,000 at $9.50, $2,000.00 at $9.50, $8,000 at $9 and $2,500 at $9.00 amid a long string of wagers between $100 and $1,000,' says spokesman Neil Evans. With Betstar, CDT is a clear fav at $7.00 (6/1).

Thursday, October 15, 2009
Posted @ 10:54 amQuickly bouncing back from his bust-up with David Hayes, top jockey Craig Williams has landed the ride on the Gai Waterhouse-trained Manhattan Rain in Sat week's Grp 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
That beautiful feeling...Delectable Francesca Cumani, daughter of trainer Luca Cumani, says Cima De Triomphe is as good as any horse her father has brought to Australia. CDT is currently the race favorite at around the $7.00 mark. The Cumanis are happy with the barrier (#11) and the jockey, Damien Oliver. Francesa says: '"We haven't had the best luck in the Caulfield Cup the last two years but I'm sure Damien will be happy to know he's drawn better this year.

MRC boss hypes up those Caulfield Cup international raiders
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Posted @ 7:05 amJust how good are the international runners in the Caulfield Cup? Melbourne Racing Club honchos are saying they are superstars. MRC chairman Peter Young reckons Cima De Triomphe and Kirklees are better performed in Europe than Speed Gifted was before he came to Australia earlier this year. They'll be the first European Grp 1 winners to run in a Caulfield Cup. He says: 'With the line-up we've got, headed by the strongest European representation ever, it is certainly going to be a strong, competitive race.'
MRC officials were shocked when Lee Freedman pulled his classy import Speed Gifted out of the race, though some form analysts are potting SG's mud-track Metrop win at Randwick. Speed Gifted will now target the Cox Plate on the way to the Melbourne Cup.
Gerald Ryan changed his mind about a CC run for Ready To Lift when he learned of the demise of the injured Maldivian and Freedman's decision to pull Speed Gifted. Ryan had more or less decided the previous night not to run the mare. But he says: 'I was definitely influenced when some of those started falling out out of the race...I thought, 'she's fit, she's here, she's got 51.5 kilograms, which she's never had in her life before. Why wouldn't I run her'?''
