I have no doubt that had she been in the clear from the 200m she'd have won. That was her first raceday start since mid-June.

It would be a perfect end to the spring carnival for Mark Kavanagh to strike in the final race, and that's what I reckon will happen when he steps up with (6) Sound Journey 10/1 and (14) Our Saint 16/1 in race 9, the Emirates hdcp 1400m at Flemington. Sound Journey, with Michael Rodd aboard, comes in off a last start 7th/11 over 1200m at Caulfield on Oct 14. That was his first start since early May. He's a much better horse over the 1400m trip and he's a proven winner, twice, when 2nd-up from a spell. Beaten into 2nd by a freak 'fly home' performance by All The Queues last start, (7) Rondanini 3/1 should be able to go one better when she steps up in distance in race 6, a Country Showcase RB62 hdcp 2015m at Seymour on Thursday. The 4YO copped a bad check in the early stages (passing 1300m) of an RB62 hdcp 1600m at Cran on Oct 11 and settled midfield, some 6 lens or so off the pace. Dan Nikolic brought her right into contention on the turn and she hit the front with a sweeping run at the 200m. Just when it seemed she had the race in her keeping, along came the winner with a sizzling finale to beat her by a length. Rondanini now steps up in distance but I'm quietly confident she'll handle it OK provided she can be ridden back quietly off the pace and saved for a 200m burst.

Mick Price's 4YO (1) Al Omghe 3/1 has a fair weight to carry (58.5kgs) but he has some class and I fancy he'll prove too strong in race 8, an RB62 hdcp 1414m at Pakenham on Monday. Al Omghe is having his first start since running 12th/15 in an RB72 3YO hdcp at Bendigo 1400m on July 8. He was btn almost 11 lens by At The Crease, a useful type. Three starts back he resumed from a break to finish 5 lens 7th/11 to Gold In Dubai at Caul 1200m on May 23, but that was a $70,000 race. I'm taking the base formline via his stout 2nd to Fair Trade in a 3YO hdcp 1410m at Flemington on Jan 17. A repeat of that run will see him win today. The value in the race may come from the George Osborne trained (4) Doog Tros 5/1. She's had almost 6 weeks off and is switching back from 2000m. I fancy the canny Osborne will have the 6YO mare wound up.

She had to come from a wide gate (#13 of 14) and her apprentice jockey pushed her along hard wide out to take the lead around the 600m mark. She crossed to the rails and led the field into the straight, conceding only inside the final 100m. Her jockey appeared to have lost his whip. She finished only 3 lens from the winner. Today, drawn in gate #6, and with a more experienced rider, she could sprint very well.
